40 Breeder Lighting Question

Hi all,

I’m in the process of putting together a 40 breeder. I’d like to do a mixed reef setup eventually, but will probably start out with softies. Are 2 AI primes 16 enough for a 40 breeder? I’ve potentially got the option to pick one up from a buddy for pretty cheap, but if I don’t need a third I won’t bother. TIA!

Start here. This was asked the other day and has some information in it. Also a fellow hobbyist with a 40 breeder sharded their setup so you can see what it looked like.

40g Breeder lighting

Just curious what would you suggest for 40g breeder. I’m thinking of a mixed reef at the moment. In general, I don't want my lights to be limiting factor in terms of coral. Any suggestion would be much appreciated.

two AI primes are a good start for LPS/softies for a 40B. eventually, if you venture into SPS you'll have to upgrade to two hydra32HD's or similar lights(noopsyche, reefbreeder's, smatfarm/viparspectra black box, etc), or if you have the budget, two reefi uno pro 2.0's. which will be literally the last lights you'd ever need to buy for the 40B. (edit: and if you upgrade tank sizes, can do well with most sizes unless you're going over 125G)

for my 40B i ran two hydra 32hd's, and each had a reef brite led kit.
