Dont go to Petco for test. look up a LFS in your area they are willing to help you test your water with better test kits some have these really nice machines that they dont sell to the public that will run all test with one sample but will charge you like 15$ which is a cover price for the test disk they require.
There's only 2 mom&pop shops around here, one is appointment only and impossible to get ahold of, the other is open on the weekend only.

The only immediate options I have are either API test kits or TopFin test strips, I'd have to wait for shipping for anything else.
Do you have a lfs ( local fish store) nearby?

Through research I learned in this hobby is going cheap will cost you more money down the line.
I wasn't looking for the cheapest kit, API and TopFin are the only things in stock in town.

Petco sells the Seachem ammonia badge alerts for like $8. Might want to grab one so you don't have to constantly test.
I'd run a water sample to Petco for testing and while you are there, grab an ammonia alert so you don't have to constantly test for ammonia.
I was planning on bringing them a water sample. And yeah, I'm going to grab one of the sticker alerts too.

So because that is what happened to you, that must mean this is the same?

to be fair i have horrible experiences with API. i use to run API when i was new. i always run double testing between my hanna and my Redsea kits and i can say they provided more better results then API did..

it could be a fault on petco, it really is hard to say on the store they are looking great and the next day their dead.

Yes, API is not the best. But they are good enough for cycling and there are ways around the false ammonia positive. Heck, Marc Levenson aka Melev uses API for nitrate.
