That is good about the ammonia spike, when you are cycling its the only time you want to see an ammonia spike! It means progress.

It's bee a while since I have done an update it's way past due.

so I have tranfered everything from my 14 gal biocube and have taken that down, going to focus on this tank only.

ATM I'm only running a BRS dual reactor with GFO and Carbon, no skimmer. Doing 5 gal water changes a week everything seems to be doing great and happy.
