I'll have to look at the stems and see which one is the voltage and look at what mine looks like. Yours looks amazing.
@billyocean can I ask your parameters? Your acros look outstanding.
It's the potassium. That brings out the pinks and purples if I'm not mistaken.8-8.5 alk sometimes consumption changes and I adjust accordingly.
420-450ish cal
1450ish mag
15ish n03
.1 po4
420ish potassium
Eh I saw it and don’t see what everyone’s going on about. The CGI was terrible and the story made no sense. It was SO good!! Also congrats super excited for you guys
Is potassium something you have to dose? As in is it basically zero or very low in normal water mixes? It's the potassium. That brings out the pinks and purples if I'm not mistaken.
Some salt mixes have potassium specifically, some do not - just trace amounts. Is potassium something you have to dose? As in is it basically zero or very low in normal water mixes?
It will get low if you have a high consumption compared to water volume, but with roughly weekly 10% water changes, most systems will not have low levels of potassium. Is potassium something you have to dose? As in is it basically zero or very low in normal water mixes?
Which ones have you found have none in it?Some salt mixes have potassium specifically, some do not - just trace amounts.
Not none. I think it was on Reef Builders they mentioned that some have lower levels so I'm guessing salt mixes like Instant Ocean.Which ones have you found have none in it?
Eh the regular instant ocean I think came in around 380-400 when I did a couple ICP tests on it. The Reef Crystals variety was well above 440ppm, which is the general target, from what I understand. Not none. Reds/Pinks and some PurplesPrimarily for coloring reds and pinks in Montiporas, Pocilloporas, Birdsnest, other Stys and Seriatoporas. The supplement is Potassium (not potassium iodide). If you are using a high potassium salt mix such as Oceanic, Tropical Marine Pro and you are doing regular water changes, you are more than likely not going to need to supplement this much. For dosing you can use your monitporas, especially caps as indicators. Supplementing is required when Montiporas display slower growth and appear washed out to grey appearance. Indicators on Stys and Pocs are when they look like they have been exposed to air. Polyps are completely withdrawn and colors are light. Other indicators of potassium deficiency is when the pinks turn into a light brown and when acroporas loose their color and get lighter and pale. A major potassium deficiency is seen when tissue is lost, mostly starting from the base opposed to spotting (patchy look). And overdose can lead to tip burning so don’t mistake tip burn for new growth. Tips burns will be white with no polyps.

Speaking of which, both varieties of Instant Ocean have been out of stock for a month or two. One of my LFS owners said they’re merging with another company. Anyone else heard anything about this?
Haha no joke!Probably BRS...
Weird... Did a little light reading about potassium just now... Based on my Red monti cap I may be potassium deficient...Eh the regular instant ocean I think came in around 380-400 when I did a couple ICP tests on it. I’d recommend spending hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars to try and fix this problem.Weird... Did a little light reading about potassium just now... Based on my Red monti cap I may be potassium deficient...
All I said is I may be potassium deficienct...I’d recommend spending hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars to try and fix this problem.
I’m not convinced of the trend of chasing trace elements these days. I have a lot to say on the subject, but I’ll start with the notion that I’ve seen the information you posted above passed around more times than an a virus between sailors, but no one really says where that info came from. Best I can trace it back is Aqua Forest putting it on their website then Andre copying it for the foundation of his Reef Moonshiners product.
Even then, it’s anecdotal at best. Sure, you spent hundreds on the extra dosers, the dozens of bottle of distilled water with a flake of a trace element in them then your colors got better. You also forgot to mention you added more fish, started feeding more, and provided more nutrients to your starved corals, or the new powerheads you added for better flow. When corals aren’t looking good, people start changing things. When was the last time you changed one variable at a time?
And yes, that was from Aquaforest. Not saying I'm going to dose potassium, just saying I may be potassium deficienct. I use Reef Crystals but I rarely do water changes so there is a possibility I am deficient. Just an interesting thought.I’d recommend spending hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars to try and fix this problem.

Sorry, I missed the point on that one and went on a rant! HahaAll I said is I may be potassium deficienct...
