Do it! It will surely be more affordable. You can stock the 40 nicely without breaking the bank, and have some really big non reef fish. I'm all about that.

Do it and tie them together to the same sump.

This way you can have the nice non reef safe fishes and a reef with some nano fishes.

This was my thoughts exactly have nice passive reef and a pred tank. Be cool to have the differrnt types and much more affordable. I mean I could do the 150 but esp with florida vaca in oct and xmas comming. Wont hurt my wallet as much. And of course easier to work on 22" instead of 31"

Mike I wouldn't plum them togather. Your going to use more supplements (ca alk mag) then just the 40gal.
By the way nice puffer. Puff puff give. Lol

Agreed. I think they should be seperate as well. Reefs require so much more than a fowlr. I got a 10 gallon if you want it for a sump for the 40gal.

I thought about that but then I thought with that extra water volume and the tank will be mostly lps thought probly wouldn't need to dose just water changes every so often to replace trace elements. Ill only have a handfull of sps. Or u think ill still be dosing?

If you stay on top of water changes thats probably all youll have to do maybe a lil supplements every now and then but that will probably be it. Just do yourself a favor if you want a reef tank get a reef ready tank. Youll always thank yourself later.
