I have not used a par meter myself, although I did use the photone app with a diffuser (yeah, I’m cheap). Typically I start with the lights under powered a bit to acclimate, then gradually increase lighting by small increments (over a period of weeks). In the end, it’s the growth of my colonies that I monitor over time.

I think it's more than just lighting effectiveness but coral growth and coral "happiness" tells me things are working right - both with lighting and parameters.

I initially use a par meter to set intensity. I then adjust based on coral behavior and health.
