DAILY QUESTION: What’s your opinion on the role of lighting in creating a balanced aquarium ecosystem?

It’s critical. At a basic level, reef tanks are a combination of three systems — removal of nutrients and pollutants, addition of necessary elements to support the metabolic needs of the livestock and water movement. Light is a primary means of adding nutrition through photosynthesis. It also drastically changes how the tank looks, which is why we keep them to begin with.

It's all in the mounting. When redoing the room I put in extra blocking so that I could hang fixtures for the aesthetics.

Hmmm.... not as much with the light as with coral placement. Didn't have those options back in the day running MH.

Probably will not change my routine very much, hopefully I will get better dimming functionality, intensity settings and I look forward to experimenting with the night light function.

DAILY QUESTION: How do you balance the needs of different coral types when setting up your lighting schedule?

It is more about coral placement than the lighting schedule. In nature the sun rises and the sun sets... the corals need to sit where it is comfortable for them, because the sun isn't going to adapt to suit them. I attempt to mimic that by slowly ramping up and down the lighting and ensuring the right spectrum of artificial light is available, but otherwise it is about coral placement.
