I love a good surprise so I decided to do something fun and order mystery corals from Queen City Corals. Can't wait to see what I get and I hope they are labeled...

That sounds like a fun way to stock a tank! Can't wait to see what you get.

High nitrates can cause tissue recession and brittle skeleton. I would increase frequency and amount of water changes, shoot for phosphates of .05-.1 and nitrates of 10-15. That being said my tank has been running nitrates at 25 and phosphates at .25. Yes the flesh bands are small but those torches are far from gone. I was given a torch from a local reefer because it was on its way out, zero flesh band and that was a year and three months ago. If you look at my DT picture it’s the one on the left.
thanks for the tips! ill bump up my water changes!

another thing i wondered about. i have my skimmer running all the time but it never fills up the reservoir. it makes lots of foam in the bottom part but not enough to make it up to the cup. so i just run it to help with aeration i guess :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes: . it used to pull stuff but not anymore. i let the fleece roller do the cleaning. but im wondering if the skimmer would be pulling stuff, wouldnt that help with the nitrates? i tries raising it about an inch but it didnt make any difference. thoughts?

Dry skim pulls more junk and less water. Wet skim pulls more water and same or less junk.

sorry i dont understand :confounded-face: . you have to really dumb things down for me:oops:. i just have it running wide open
Take a picture of the skimmer. Usually there's a valve at the top on the side. Adjusting that increases/decreases the water flowing into the skimmer vs out of the skimmer. Wide open means most of the water goes out of the skimmer, closed means most of the water ends up in the collection cup. Find the sweet spot in between where the bubbles inside the cup (with the lid off) are just reaching the top of the neck coming into the cup. Adjust it so the bubbles overflow slightly for a wetter skim.

With a new skimmer it usually takes days to weeks to get it dialed in so it works well. Brand new skimmers need to be broken in.

Hope you guys have been well. I have a few updates on my tank. My dream coral has always been a Cynarina. I finally felt like my tank was in a good enough place and got a couple! That feeding reaction is crazy to observe.
