I've had something similar happen.. When I was moving all the fish from a smaller tank to my current cube I put them in a small biocube. The hose connecting the return pump to the return nozzle had come off. I was off to the store to grab a few things and on my way out I saw my rainford goby looking at the dark return pump section and I could just see him thinking "I wonder whats in there?"... FOr a split second I thought I should really cover that little hole... Then I figured I'm going literally across the street to my LFS. I'll be back in 5 minutes if there's traffic.
When I got back I found pieces of my rainford goby everywhere. He went in tht little overflow hole and got sucked through the maxijet.
I was especially bummed... Rainford gobies don't typically come like that guy. He ate everything, and wasn't afraid of anything including my hands in the tank.
____________
As for your tank. Just make sure there's a lot of surface agitation keeping the oxygen high. If your tank is a little cloudy i'd be worried about a bacteria bloom.
