So I have an established Yellow Tang in my 120G and I tried adding a multi banded pipefish to the tank recently. It took only a day for the tang to start going after the tail of the pipefish. Anyone seen tangs go after non-conspecifics? How do I stop this behavior? Does "tang time out" actually work? I currently have the pipefish in an acclimation box.

Thanks

Yes Tangs will absolutely bother other types of fish if so inclined. Was it actually aggression or curiosity?
I had another multi band previously that he nipped the tail until it was gone. That one unfortunately met its demise in a Vortech, probably bc it couldn't swim well anymore. This was about 3 months ago.

This is a new multiband that I added and I'm seeing the same behavior again.

What is the mirror trick?
Buy a small mirror, tape it to the tank, and the YT will be there trying to intimidate what he thinks is another YT all day. He will get tired, give up, then come back. Doing this will allow the pipefish to establish and resets YT’s mindset for a while.

Thats not good. I wouldnt try another then. Something about this fish or the pipe fish interests the tang. It really should stop before that if its worried about the things that make them aggressive in the first place once the tang realizes its not competition.

We have two firefish that have gotten along fine for the three months the tank has been running ,(first two fish in the tank) . One has gotten bigger and has been picking on the smaller one. They have been sleeping in the same small hole and it almost seems the larger fish is trying to evict the smaller one who doesn't want to go. This might be worth a try.

I dont know if things have changed in the years I was out but not a lot of info was known about the sexual dimorphism of firefish. They either pair up or fight in my experience. So if it has been established how to differentiate the sexes that may be a way to help or if they are like clownfish or anthias and can change in the absence of one of the sexes. I have had quite a few firefish in the past I like them a lot. I have had mostly good luck in getting pairs to live peacefully in my tanks but some have not.

I tried a 4 inch round mirror and the fiji puffer is totally fascinated with it. Unfortunately the firefish hasn't gone anywhere near it. I put a piece of rock in that made a nice small cave i'm hoping the small firefish will move into but he (she?) doesn't want to leave where he spends his nights.

Yeah I doubt that mirror will work on the firefish they are not nearly aggressive enough to bother with it.
