Red leg crabs will likely eat your snails...which is why I went only snails in my tank now.

If you want some cool crabs, try an Emerald crab.

I haven't had trouble with my scarlet leg hermits killing snails but my blue legs attack as soon as the snails hit the water and it doesn't matter what kind of snail they are. I got the blue legs for removing HA and keeping my SB clean but they don't do as good a job on the HA (as I was told) as the snails did. Snails may be slow but they are thourough. I am at this time, attempting to catch all blue legs and trade them in for snails.....

I don't keep hermits at all. Love my diverse collection of snails too much to take a chance that they might get eaten. I do have some emerald crabs in case of bubble algae and hoping they will spawn to provide free coral food. They are bigger than hermits and I enjoy watching crab behavior. I don't fool myself into thinking they never eat my snails. They are less likely than hermits but all crabs are opportunistic omnivores that will eat whatever expends the least amount of energy to catch.

Scarlett leg hermits are pretty good but red leg and blue leg will eat your snails, steal food from coral. My tank is snails only. Blue leg hermits are in my sump.

Yes, I have caught the blue legs stealing food from the corals as well (grrrr). You have a good idea too about putting them in the sump. I just may do that. If you have a fuge, will they eat up the critters in there as well, such as copepods?
