I’m debating what eel I should get.
I previously had a barred moray (Echidna polyzona) but during fallow the eel jumped on the last few days of qt.
It’s a 75g tank now done with fallow
I know I want an eel from the Echidna genus I’m just not sure which yet. I’m leaning towards the chainlink (E. catenata) and maybe a snowflake (E. nebulosa)
And I’m also not sure if I should do 1 eel or 2 eels. And when should I add the eel(s)? Should I go with them being first or last? Somewhere in the middle. With my last eel I had no problems with any fish including smaller fish.

Any recommendations on when to add, how many, what species of eel?
Thanks in advance.

The size of your tank is suited to accomodate one full grown eel of around 24 inches

Adding 2 juvenile eels can be done, but 75 gallons is small for two full grown eels, unless you plan to upgrade the tank in about a year, I would stick to 1 eel long term.

If you plan to add 2 eels, the more recommended way is to add them both at once which gives them suitable time to make their own territory but this is mainly applied to gymnothorax's which are more aggressive, but to echidnas you can as much as ignore that principle and can add them one after another

You have a few species which can suit a 75 gallon:
Echidna nebulosa (snowflake eel)
Echidna catenata (chainlink eel)
Echidna polyzona (barred eel)
Echidna xanthospilos (skeletor eel)

These are the ones which are usually found with the skeletor being the more uncommon among them

I can't say which eel I can recommend as I have yet to have these specific eels, i currently have a zebra and a more rarer species such as a echidna delicatula, but @littlefoxx can provide valuable info on the snowflake

There is a Dwarf Golden Wolf Eel available right now in Raleigh NC. Talk About rare, I already have one, or this would be mine. Sorry for the pic color, 5:00 am moonlights on

Ok thanks, I’ll stick with one eel since there aren’t any plans to upgrade in the near future

Snowflake! I love mine. Her name is Ghost, shes a sweetheart.
What puts me off on snowflakes is I’ve seen a lot that they go after fish
And also seen a lot that they are well behaved and eat no fish.
Im currently between chain link and snowflake still going to be researching a bit more to be sure
Snowflakes do have amazing color

Expensive is relevant, this is a $2000.00 Eel, Way Way Way cheaper

Whats your top dollar? It will around 600-800 I would imagine
That’s still too expensive. I’m currently leaning more towards the chain link they are cheaper and seem to be more fish safe.

They do not go after fish. Ghost wont eat silversides even. Those who have them go after fish are not feeding them properly to be honest, and they are not aggressive either. Keeping eels well fed is the key. I have two fang tooth eels, only had one eat a fish before.

Maybe I will go with a snowflake. That or a chainlink.

Snowflakes are also easier to find!
Yeah definitely are. I don’t think ive ever seen a chain link in person while I’ve seen a few snowflakes.

When do you think I should add an eel? First or last or in the middle of stocking, I’m making the stocking plan right now and I’m not sure when to add the eel.

Would you think I could keep both together getting them and growing them as juveniles?
I’ve been told no only short term here on this thread. On a different thread I’ve been told yes, and while looking online seen it’s someone’s worked out and it sometimes hasn’t.
It’s a 75 4ft with about 60lbs or rock + a few inches of Sand for burrows and I can also add pvc

I also like the white eye moray (Gymnothorax thyrsoideus). Mine is about 20", doesn't bother any tankmates, even the damsels, hawkfish, and dottyback that are bite sized. Shares a cave with my 29" zebra eel most of the time. He loves shrimp, squid, clam, and silversides, and will randomly steal chunks of nori...

I can’t find too much information online besides id threads what I have found is that they are a mellow Gymnothorax species.
What concerns me is that it is still a Gymnothorax species which is a fish eater so it may go after fish especially in a 75g
I assume their care is similar to the jewels moray eel (muraena lentiginosa)
I also assume they are a rarer eel since I can’t find too many thread or sites that aren’t selling them that have a lot of information.
What tank size are you keeping yours in, would you think they would stay fish safe in a 75g.

I have one as well in my 300 gallon. Mellow eel but needs to be kept well fed!! Loves silversides.

So each will be two feet. Lots of eel and waste. I would say really depends on what you want for other stock?
