I noticed that the upper narrow trunk of my red mangrove has become unstiff, a little shriveled and blackened. The roots seem to be fine. Would it be better to move it to fresh water? Not too long ago a baby rounded leaf broke off there, maybe that's why it started to wilt a bit.
I have yet to notice any visible growth during the month of saltwater transfer and the month in saltwater afterward

Or maybe it's because of it was to submersed for a few weeks when it was still with the leaf? (I thought that edge submerging can force them to extend, so i can elongate it to put deeper in tank by the time)
There was a photo:

you saying the new leaf was submerged…if so, there is your problem right there: it drowned… or rotted

btw, you can start those above ground in a normal pot like a normal plant …. they don’t have to be fully submerged if at all

the tip is gone before it has branched…IME it would be faster and easier to drop $6 on a new mangrove pod ….

No emergency and no need to hurry
so it will die anyway?:loudly-crying-face: the problem is that its hard to get that things here...

well mangroves aren’t moncots so it could theoretically make another growing tip but I’m not sure if it can or not at that early growth stage…
As long as it has living tissue you may as well keep it alive and see what gives…Like most folks around here I’m just a hobbyist so nothing I say is written in stone
…well I say if you got limited supply, don’t throw it away, give it a shot then

Hey! I have a bunch of mangroves! Someone else earlier in the thread is correct, sumberging the leaves will cause the new growth to rot especially in saltwater. I would definitely recommend going brackish with it (1.010 ish) to help it recover from the injury. Since the roots haven't grown at all since switching to saltwater it was probably in a fragile state of shock and submerging it was the last straw before the top rotted. Just stick that bad boy in a cup with water filled up halfway up the mangrove and leave it in a sunny windowsill. Good luck!! :)

I think the roots have grown a bit during the salt water, but I think I'll pгt it in a less salty container in the same place.

Then how can they be lengthened to plant deeper after they have matured a bit and get a couple branches, or is it not possible at all to plunge the trunk deeper and deeper?

Let the roots barely touch substrate (sand, mud, etc) then when they grow into it, raise the mangrove so the roots are barely touching again. Rinse and repeat until you get the desired height

I think elongation by roots will be quite difficult with my 55 sm deepness, or i will just wait for it to do it by itself. Buuuut i thought about doing later a kind of acrylic shelf with small rocks or other substrate to grow on and rooting

I just put a nice piece of rock with some good holes in it below my mangrove and allowed it to grow into that. Since mangroves are bouyant if you ever disturbed the substrate (or got a fish that would disturb it) it might cause the mangrove to float if that's all its rooted in which could cause significant issues
