The only thing I have to say is, sometimes you have to buy what you can afford. It sounds like most of the reefers on this forum is wealthy.

Money definitely is a factor. I've never had a problem with Rio pumps. I've used many different models for months without a single problem. I do agree with the Seaclone though. Had one on a 46 bow and it didn't keep up. Put a Coralife skimmer on it that cost the same amount and the water is pristine now.

The reason companys makes seaclones and rios is they know there is people out there that can not afford top of the line. I have used all the products listed in this thread and they do work, but just not as good as some. There are some people out there that has the same passion for this hobby as most R2R members, but does not have the money to buy top of the line. Have you ever priced a halide system, why do you think I run pc's and have mostly softies.

Hey Reef-Nut I definitely know what your saying. When I first started I used a seaclone and paid $150 for it...:(

Anyway I never knew the cost associated with this hobby and glad I didn't. I am by no means rich or wealthy, but I use some very nice equipment now. I funded basically my whole tank with tunze, deltec, and geo, almost solely on selling coral and old equipment off.

I used compacts for a good while and they did fine as well as the cheaper equipment for sure. It can be done and you can be successful. I know the majority of the reefers in my area that are members here do not have allot of money. Some use the basics and some save and buy better skimmers and lighting and such.

I wouldn't say everyone here is rich. But I would say we've all been suckered into buying some crap in the past. IMO you'd be better off skimmerless than using a seaclone. Did I mention I had three of them on a 180 at one time. I didn't know better and I trusted that the store I bought them from wouldn't sell me junk. I think they still sell them. Funny is they also sold me the rio's. I crashed my tank three times by listening to them.

I could be the only one with this opinion but I will never buy another pistol shrimp. Mine has killed over $300 worth of fish.

1) Unless you can spend hundreds of dollars on test kits and are really expirienced and know what your doing, dont use additives.

Biggest lesson I learned, just buy a good RO salt mix, and do a 10% once a week, or more. My tank has never looked better since I stopped with the additives.

2) just want to comment on the remarks people have made about using pc lights, cylone skimmers, budget pumps etc because of money issues. I agree but only to an extent. I don't think you need a $500 skimmer on your 55 gal reef tank, but I would spend $150 on a decent skimmer, over $99 on a skimmer that will not work well, you will end up loosing more than $50 in dead fish/coral when your tank crashes. You will be much more succesfull in the long run, and actualy probably spend less money(and stay in the hobby) if you use reliable gear, even if it takes you an extra 6 months to save up for all the equiptment(like it did for me). Its worth it in the long run.

*disclaimer - I have not tried keeping SPS yet, but have just about everythign else.

I have never heard of a pistol shrimp killing fish...do you mean mantis?

I used a seaclone for years, never any problems and it pulled out a ton of stuff - but it was a pain to reset and had to be set correctly to work.

Biggest wastes of money:
cheap lights

buy the equipment you are planning on having long term. don't waste your money buying something you know you will have to upgrade in a few months because it is all you can afford now. save your money and shop around for the best deal on good equipment.

Eclipse hoods and pc retrofit kits to upgrade them...we wasted over $300 and then had to turn around and buy t5ho and HOB filters a couple of weeks later.

1.) The Pretty fish that the LFS says is "Oh, yes it's reef safe".
Do not buy on impulse ... read about the fish you are buying or grab a book in the store and look it up first.

2.) Used live rock... unless you know the person well... someones pest can now be yours.
Watch out for Nudis and crabs as hitch hikers or possible copper used in a tank, now in the used rock.
