Hi guys,

My coral beauty has started breathing rapidly, he not swimming just on his side…:

Last night we lost a shrimp as well well it committed suicide through the fan and my wrasse also died…

We did a 75% water change and the water parameters are fine… but I don’t know what’s gone wrong?

Is he on his way out or can we help him?

Cannot help you without the water parameters, please share it.
What is the tank size? Tank age?

What are those brown things beside the angel, is that food or poop?

Have there been any recent changes to your tank? Tank size? We need to know about parameters as well. What about other fish in your tank? How are they?

Food, thought he might be hungry I feed them twice a day….. tank is 100lt and tank has been in place for around 6 months… everything was fine until we changed the water we get out water from the aquarium we get our fish from…. He seems to be swimming now very odd…..

Parameters, errr we use test strips that show all levels are fine and within range…. I know not ideal but looking to get something better to track this…

The tank is too small for that fish. And that’s a lot of food decomposing in the water. Test strips are not adequate testing tools. There are a few red flags here.
I would agree. Check out Hanna Checkers for accurate testing (except for Calcium). I'd go with Red Sea Calcium Pro.for that one. Also, just.for future reference, when posting issues, it's very helpful to include the information below. It seems like a lot, but it's necessary to provide as much as possible for the Fish Medics........

Aquarium Parameters:
Aquarium type: Reef, Fish-only, Quarantine tank
Aquarium water volume
Filtration type
Lighting
How long has the aquarium been established?
Digital image of the whole aquarium under white light

Water quality (be sure to indicate what measurement units you are using, as well as the test kit brand)
Temperature
pH:
Salinity / specific gravity
Ammonia
Nitrite
Nitrate
Phosphorus
Copper
Other

In-depth information:
Have you lost any fish to this problem yet? (see below)
Are any invertebrates affected?
Respiration rate of affected fish (in gill beats per minutes, count for 15 seconds and multiply by 4)
Are the affected fish still feeding?
What remedies have you tried so far?
Digital image of the fish with the health issue, taken under white light -
- if needed, indicate by drawing a line around the area in question.
A short video of the fish (linked YouTube videos work well) - this is perhaps the best information that you can supply, as long as the video is clear.

Do you have surface agitation , or in a pinch you can set up a bubbler. Double check your temperature during the heat wave , too hot water can cause lethargic-ness.

If this happened right after a water change , chances are the new water had something to do with the upset fish. Possibly not a 0 TDS situation , or too high/low salinity , or large swing in pH.

Either way , do not continue to make large changes to try and help . Sometimes quick action and interventions can cause more stress. Also you need to invest in a better test kit. I know the hobby is fun and expensive , but if your Coral Beauty dies and you buy another one , you've already spent more money on fish than a proper test kit to test your water . Need to make sure you have the proper items before you have the animals. You would not buy a dog without first getting dog food and ensuring the dog has a happy place to live , fish are the same :)

Okay, thank you for your advice, but the fish is not massive and we have checked if it is suitable for the size of the tank and he has been fine for months before this… so I don’t think the tank size is the issue but we are entitled to our opinions

i cant think

Ive heard of a similar scenario, what salinity and temperature was the water prior to entering the system?

Too low of a temperature or a swing in salinity can cause Angels to be at risk.

Fishy tank
All I’ll say is Coral Beauties get huge. This was my tiger tail;
IMG_7935.jpeg

And he was in my 4’ tank - you can see him in the top above the wavemaker. He was my largest angel.

Wow, this is lovely! He was really small when we got him…. I think they must grow at different rates some bigger than others! I am watching him carefully after today!

Taking the fish out of tank will add stress. A video is more helpful. Is fish breathing heavy or normal now?
Other occupants still normal?

I suspect something in the water you added for your water change was significantly different from your tank - like the pH, alkalinity or salinity and it shocked the fish. They don't normally recover from laying on their side unless it was something like that.
