you don't need wavemakers, but you will need flow around the tank. Up to you how to accomplish that

when is comes down to an evo Fluval tank, they are honestly the worse shape tank in my opinion… and you’d have to find something like an AI wave maker… just so it sits flush and doesn’t stick out like any other wave maker.

My best bet is to find a cheap one out somewhere like Facebook marketplace.

This one’s a 2000gph, just get the smallest one and throw it on the lowest setting.

Or go with a hygger 5-30 gallon wave maker for waaaay cheaper.

I had a DIY 20 gallon long tank and they certainly can be difficult to get good flow in. I achieved what I thought was good flow with a large return pump combined with a Random Flow Generator from Vivid Aquatics. I also added a Jebao SLW-10. At the time this was the smallest wavemaker they make and even then it was too large. Since they have released smaller versions since, I'd go with a SLW-3. If you like total control check out the MLW series. They allow app control for a few bucks more. It allows you to customize flow patters and strengths differently throughout the day. Not needed, but something I find useful for a few periods of the day to have higher flow for better nutrient exports.

Edit: as far as everyone who says jebao is crap. I disagree, I've been using the same jebao pumps for 5 years straight without issue. I have tried other pumps like the Nero and was sorely disappointed by the noise and performance. I do like how controllable the Nero is, their app is very well done, but for the price difference I can't justify going to something name brand.
