My tank has been running for 1 week with my 150 watt heater. I have it set around 74 ish, but with the lights on from 10-7 , it gets too hot. (around 79.5) Should I shorten the cycle ? or get a better heater?:squigglemouth:

after i added my new t-5 high out put lights my temp was jumping from 76 up to 84 i started freaking out. i put 2 computer fans i had laying around the house now its stay right at 77. so i would look in to putting a fan blowing over the top of the water only drawback is the water evaporation rate go's up.

oh oh, well its getting to 79.5 highest, i turned the cycle down 2 hours now, from 12-7 so maybe that will help just a little , what is your heater set on?

Just turn the heater up to 78-79 degrees. That way you don't get the swing in temp. Also 79 is perfectly normal temp.

I thought about turning it up and I did do that , but I was afraid that if I turn it up, then the light cycle goes, that by the end of the night it will be maybe above 80

Raising the heaters temp will only raise your max temp that you will reach.... if the heat swing is created by the lights anyways...... If the swing is created by the ambient room temp (ie. no AC, and the house temp goes higher the tank temp, the temp of the tank will also increase), then raising the heater temp will help somewhat.

If the temp swing is in fact created by the lights you need to either add a chiller (expensive) or run a fan over the surface of the water (tank, or sump.... will increase evaporation). I personally run a 6" clip on fan over the top of my 180g and my max temp has been less then 77, with my heater set at 75..... That was on a day it was over 90 and the wife decided not to run the AC while I was at work, temp inside the house was 83 when I got home at 11pm.

Hm..yea I guess I will have to try to find a fan..my room temperature is definitely not the problem. The only issue is that the top of my tank is mostly covered so would a fan sitting in the back where there is only a 2" x 1 1/2 opening..going to make a difference

Ok, I have raised my lights up , now they hang 8" above the tank, 6 AM this morning I completely UNPLUGGED the heater. I get home. Temperature is at 80 degrees...I'm lost. My next step is just removing the 2 glass panel covers on the tank and seeing if that lowers the temperature. I have a Hydor Koralia 1050 gph powerhead in the tank as well as a Bak-Pak DP protein skimmer that has 2 acella pumps that sit in the tank. Could these be heating up the water at all ????

Umm, 74 is lower than my alarm statement, I would never run it that cold IMO, my tank is regularily at 79.5 to 82.6 in the summer, sometimes it reaches 84. Raising your lights will just make it so there is less light for corals. It gets better in the winter. What brand heater are you using? What are you using to test temp? How big is your tank? How many bulbs and how long is your fixture? Do you have a sump?

I found that if I just remove the 2 top glass panels that I can keep my temp around 77 degrees which is where I want it. It is a 65 gallonw FOWLR tank with no sump, so I am not worried about the lights for corals being that I have no plans on getting any.
