Was sold a jawbreaker. Is it a jawbreaker?

I totally agree

I have these, they were just a few for over a year and now are multiplying and I find them all over the tank. There’s a few new ones in the sandbed in front of the colony. I found one in the back of the tank. I don’t even know what they are or where they came from, I didn’t buy them lol

If I went down this “collector shroom” path I would isolate them to my 1.1g pico sandbed and let them grow on the sandbed in there. Small space = easy harvesting. I just ripped out all this gsp overgrowth. Another weed lol

Maybe I should get a few more and make one of my other tanks into a grow out setup.

This may be a better idea than you realize. Over the course of about 3 years I have grown and sold/traded enough jawbreakers to basically cover all hobby related expenses while greatly expanding my coral collection, and funding 2 additional systems completely (this part isn't completely accurate. Ive sold plenty of other corals as well, but it all started with jawbreakers). I started with 12 polyps, have sold a couple hundred, and currently have 300 (easily) on hand. They grow like crazy for me. :)

I have an unused 28 biocube

And I have a 15g Waterbox peninsula I’m making a Goni tank

In your experience what conditions makes them grow fastest/best? Lighting/flow/nutrients? What’s your setup like?

It’s a sweet tank. I set mine up to be little to no maintenance. It can go almost 2 weeks with the auto top off. I’ve cleaned glass 2-3 times since February. No water changes. It’s a hands free tank

My philosophy for it is - nothing goes in that NEEDS to be fed. Limit the phosphates by not introducing them. Everything photosynthetic. Ive had to move torches, frogspawn, Duncan out because they grew too fast. Now I have a purple green Cynarina as a centerpiece and some easy corals surrounding it

I even skipped cycling. Put water sand and coral in on day 1

I've never noticed a difference in coloring regardless of nutrient levels, lighting, or flow (and I've tested everything). For me, coloring is 100% random. Some will have great color while still being very small and others that derived from the same parent mushroom will stay orange for a long time.

However, I believe that I have figured out a good way to greatly increase how fast they reproduce. I currently keep them in a fairly large DIY shroom box that is in the sump of my SPS system. The box is filled with seachem biomatrix that the mushrooms attach to (and it also helps with biofiltration :) ). I intentionally keep them "uncomfortable" with relatively high light and high flow. As they migrate to find a spot that they like better, they will leave little "flesh boogers" (scientific term) that then grow to become new polyps. Growth rate is exponential this way.

I'm seriously considering setting up another lowboy frag tank to increase my jawbreaker collection. It's an arbitrary number, but I've always thought it would be cool to have 1,000+ of them. Given how many I already have, I think I could reach that number in just a few months (less than 6). I just need to make the 2.5 hour drive up to San Antonio to get the tank, lol.
