Hi everyone,
I’d love to get a UV, but I would need to get a hang-on one and from what I’ve been told, the hang-on ones never work.
Do you guys have any suggestions on some good hang on ones?
TIA :)

So you have been told to get a hanging UV but that they never work? Seems to me that they told you not to get one?

What size tank and what purpose do you want to run a uv? We can give you a better answer if we know what you’re trying to do.

Also, why do you want a hang on? A picture of the situation might help us understand what makes a hanging uv the”proper solution.”

Thanks and bump for better understanding

Will do. Give me 20mins to get home. I have been told that a UV sterilizer would be very useful in my tank, but a hang on one wouldn’t work well. Only thing is that I don’t have room for a real one under my tank

Because you do t have a sump underneath your tank, this is why a hang on the back was recommended. A UV will work but there may be some placement and plumbing issues to overcome.

You do understand that UV nuke the good stuff and the bad stuff equally right? So damage to your overall developing biome in a new tank may occur. Other then someone trying to sell you something you don't need what are the specific reasons you need a UV? Some people use it to fight certain types of dinos for example.

Yes, I am constantly fighting Dino’s and would love to get rid of them, so that’s why I want to get one.

Did you determine with a microscope if they are the type that goes into the water column overnight? Dinos are caused by poor water chemistry with bottomed out nutrients levels typically so if you don't fix those issues then dinos never go away.

Ok. I thought that if I did my weekly 30% water change and fed them mysis every day the nutrients wouldn’t bottom out

Well that's incorrect. You should only be doing 20% water change at the most. Yes feeding fish and adding coral supplements can increase nutrients levels but not always enough to balance out what gets consumed and exported out via skimmer, water changes etc.... new tanks are unstable the first year and often require dosing additives like neonitro and neophos. I had to double dose neophos and neonitro for multiple months before I got measurable numbers.

Alright then. Thank you
