I currently have a Redsea Reefer 250 that is setup and established SPS dominate tank. All is doing well Great growth and tank is very stable. I am wanting to get a larger tank looking at the Planet Aquarium rimless 72 x 24 x 21, or the 96 x 24 x21. the dilemma I have is the place this tank will go is right were my Redsea is at .
Questions that I have are.

1 Do I just sell the whole setup and start over from scratch ?

2 Do I try to save everything , Live stock , coral all that stuff and then sell the reefer later ?

3 If I go with #2 what is the best way to handle this? Remember the Tank will need to be moved and all live stock saved while the new tank is set up. Do I do a full cycle or transfer and hope for the best?

You can try #2, but I am also in the same boat as you, new tank upgrade will go in the same spot as my current tank. I have been looking into setting up a 40b drilled with a sump, keeping it cheap as it is a temp tank, and set it up for several months before transferring everything that I want to keep over to it. Unfortunately their is always a risk when transferring to and from. I will not be keeping any of the sand or rock from the current tank. I will use new Marco Shelf rock and add 60 lbs of live rock.

here is a thread solely dedicated to combining tanks for 5 yrs straight, no loss. gotta read the bulk to find the recurring patterns:
-transfer no cloud. even after saying that, people still try to. we spend lots of time showing them where clouding hides and is unaccounted for. you will only recycle if you move over waste clouding detritus. if you move clean rocks, clean sand, you get no cycle.

-dont start the new reef under full lighting. the work details show us turning down, reacclimating light after the move.

also a standout detail: we do one set of moves and it doesnt vary, yet we get requests for five types of jobs

-move a reef home to home with no recycle. hundred examples.

-combine two reefs in a home, your job.

-prevent cyano or dinos from taking over

-remove a sandbed all at once; they want to be bare bottom.

-clean a sandbed and put it back, or exchange it instantly all at once for another type.

and as a rare sixth type of request, our very first work example, a preventative action. took the whole tank apart for cleaning, and nothing was wrong with it. Thats cutting edge. deep cleaning a reef before it gets invaded is so Jon M.

i did my upgrade 2 months ago, this is how i did it:
2 brute cans, made enough water to get new tank at least half full as i had no more room or more cans to make a full tank.

on upgrade day i drained the tank into a third brute can, moved the tank and stand out of the way, got new setup in and level.

filled tank with new water up to about halfway, put in new sand, put in old sand from tank after a rinse.

got water pumps connected, couple heaters in new tank then i transferred over corals and existing rock. sump was not online, went to get a couple hours of sleep.

once i woke up i got more water in tank, sump online and had to clean up due to wife coming home from out of town.

I ran new reef like that for about a week and then i added rock i had been cycling for a couple months.

the biggest mistake i made was not getting the light going sooner, took me 4 days.

I thought i was ok but all the moving around and lack of light i think caused one big issue, all sps corals browned out, my frogspawn and acans are ok and did not suffer. I did not lose any corals but the sps are just now starting to regain some color.

If i had help from fellow reefers and had my light going right away i feel things would not have browned out, im happy to not have lost a thing but in hindsight i wish i could have done my swap faster, had all rock ready to go and maybe things would have gone better.
