Anyone had good luck battling cyanobacteria? Looks like I got a small case of the red slime... Rather cure sooner then later as I a have seen how quickly it can get out of hand....
Uh oh... Cyano.... Any suggestions?

Most all nusiance algaes are caused by excess nutrients.You need to test your water for phosphates and nitrates. Also increase flow and vacumn it out when you do a water change. But it will come back if you don't reduce the nutrients. Most common causes are from overfeeding and not using ro water that contains no phosphates.

Phosphates are .05 (Hanna checker).... I had bout a peppermint shrimp a couple of weeks ago that didn't make it lo g for whatever reason... I think thats the source of the problem but their was never any carcas to remove (hermits got there fast). I think I am going to do a water change, vaccuum what I can, and drop my feeding schedule a little. I think I am also going to pick up another powerhead to take care if any deadspace. Thanks all!

Update... No dice on the increasing flow, dialing back on feedings, and continued water changes... Cyano still present. So I bought some Chemiclean and started a cycle last night... Hopefully, this takes care of things. Oh, and for the Peppermint Shrimp... I found him hiding in the back! Must have been part of a molt that I found. Stay tuned to see if the Chemi Clean is a viable option for getting rid of Cyano.

Yes, it works very well but you need to do the water change and if you're running a skimmer be on the lookout for overflows! It will likely come back though. I just do hydrogen peroxide on a maintenance basis. I helps raise the ORP and seems to have no ill effects (except for pizzing off the zoas for about an hour).

The hydrogen peroxide concept interests me.... I once used it for a dip to get rid of some hair algae (25% solution) but the frag died... Must have been on it's way out. How is it that you use it maintenance wise? I usually hear good things about it...
I use 1 mL per 10 gallons. Dose it a few hours after the lights are on as that is when ORP is taking a dive for the day (and pH is increasing). You can also dose it at that level for a week or two and that will also get cyano under control (at least temporarily). BTW, I use standard 3% solution from the drug store.

Yea... It was only a min or so dip but it didn't turn out so well... Thanks for the info. I WILL have to look into it further!

Chemi clean worked for me on the 55 when it had cayno. I don't think peroxide works, been dosing it the past week and no change. Think I will try that Aqua Marin ultra algae x, does anyone know if any lfs sale this?

Actually pretty good.... Did the treatment late last week with the prescribed amount of Chemiclean. Water change Sunday... And added some Phosguard Monday evening just to starve anything that was left. Seems to have cured it as of now... I'll try to post a few update pics.
