I guess I'm gonna get the cycle started... went out to the freezer in the garage and looked thru my frozen fish food stuff. Found a bag of cut up something white... it's either cod, or scallop. I'm pretty sure it's 1/4 a scallop. Let's just toss that in the sump and let it get all nasty.

I'd love to give you an answer, but this is above my skill level. I'm in the process of fine tuning some issues in mine as well.

0500, not sure why I woke up. Maybe I was hungry, maybe the dog was hungry. Anyway I could hear the faint trickle of water in the overflow coming from the den... I had an idea. Maybe, because that pump is so strong it needs a higher suction head to keep it from cavitating. Because it was not getting any air and it was still producing micro bubbles. Turn the pump off, let the sump settle, fill it up as high as I was comfortable with and turn the pump back on... we have 11" of water in the return and 7" over the pump. No more bubbles. Tank is clear, well, except for the new tank cloudy water.

You’re a brave man tinkering before 6am!! My rule says dont touch til your’re fylly caffeinated! That sand looks great, is ut magnetic at all like the Hawaiian?

Haha, I'm wide awake as soon as my feet hit the ground. No need to caffeinate, not really a coffee drinker anyway. It's more of a, "It's freezing outside I want something hot to drink." Any other time I want my drinks cold, even when it's cold outside.

The sand is not magnetic, I checked with my mag-float thru the bag. As far as I can tell, it's just like fine sand but black.

It's a ceramic coated sand isn't it?

It's black silica sand. We're going to have a very nice diatom bloom in a few weeks. Yay...

Oh I found some hard stats on it. It's called Tahitian Moon, grain size is 0.5-1.0mm and its 92cuft/lb.

Umm....

Let me see if I can find the MSDS, lol.
Just look and feel it. In just curious as to what it is. Pretty common in FW to coat gravel. Like that rainbow blend stuff.

Cool thanks. And fwiw silica and silicates are different. Silica is a crystal and is really though to dissolve. It's what makes it ph inert.

My cory cats in the 10g FW seem to like it. They dig thru looking for food all the time. I've had them for a few years. The dwarf flame gourami was added yesterday to replace the betta. Betta just don't last like they used too. I guess over and in breeding...

Welcome to the Deep Blue Sea @Anirban! It's going to take you a minute to catch up all the way but when you do feel free to grab a "coke" and join me on the back porch. Beautiful day in the low 70s.

Got a cold one in the fridge waiting on ya. Ignore the hacksaw and PVC cement, and the caulk gun... I know, now that the tank is finished I need to clean up my tools.
