I like the look of rock breaching the water surface but don't know how practical it is for a tank with fish since most seem to jump.

I think not only adding a fish before the ugly phase but 1 or 2 cheap corals also helps populate the necessary bacteria and pods that stabilize a system.

I too am a user of the bag trick for minimizing cloudiness when filling the tank. However I do prefer "slow cycling" verse any of the quick cycling products.
