To macro algea or to not macro algea?

Hello all! I am starting my new 125 gal(180gal with sump).

I recently went to my local big als and they had a fantastic 125 gal with sps and lps and everything was doing amazing and there was no algea what so ever.

I looked at their system and sump to see what they had, and to my surprise they weren't using any macro algea as a nutrient export?!?

I asked who took care of it and they told me they didn't chaeto as it was a time bomb and old way of doing things. I never heard of this but also couldn't deny how healthy the tank looked.

What do you think? I previously has cheato is my previous 125 but it sucked up all the nutrients. Right im debating if I should or not this time. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Well, notably the public aquariums that used algae turf scrubbers removed them years ago. Here's some links on the roles the DOC released be algae has in the decline of corals:

"Coral Reefs in the Microbial Seas " This video compliments Rohwer's book of the same title. Used copies are available on line and it may be free to read on Internet Archive. both deal with the conflicting roles of the different types of DOC (carbon dosing) in reef ecosystems and how it can alter coral microbiomes. While there is overlap bewteen his book and the video both have information not covered by the other and together give a broader view of the complex relationships found in reef ecosystems and are an excellent starting point to understand the conflicting roles of Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC, aka "carbon dosing") in reef ecosystems.
