To Fish or Not To Fish

So I've been debating lately about adding an additional fish to my 13.5 Evo.



The tank has gone through ups and downs, killed two pairs of clownfish with deadly deadly dinos, and now has been happily home to a happy little yellow tail damsel for months. The tank is in great shape now, no losses, and I kind of want to add another fish to the tank. I know I'm limited and the yellow tail might end up chasing since it's called the tank home for a while now, but it feels like it needs a little something more.

So, yes or no, and if yes, what? A single clown? A goby?

If no, what reasons? My reasons are: I'm concerned about upsetting the balance, of making my yellow tail unhappy, of the dinos returning (though no sign for months now). I'm interested in suggestions and opinions!

This is just my opinion based on what I can see as potential issues, feel free to look into it more thoroughly and disregard if you find evidence to the contrary, but damsels are pretty aggressive/territorial. Clownfish are another territorial damsel fish, so I'd expect there to be problems. I believe that a goby would be fine since they occupy different zones in the tank but I'd suggest more research on your damsel in particular.

As far as dinos, tank load, etc you would be fine with a small goby. I tend to see dinos as a result of a nutrient imbalance, nothing I'd expect another fish to affect.

if you want to add another fish, you will probably need to remove that damsel, it will likely attack any fish the moment its added to the tank.

If your happy with your tank now and with the yellow tail, then just leave it as is. The tank looks nice.

This damsel seems particularly skittish, which is the only reason I was considering trying out an addition. However, I am happy with him - non-clown damsels and other aggressive labeled fish weren't originally going to be a possibility in these small tanks because they were -supposed- to house a fancy clown pair, but after two separate pairs died (and this was over a matter of like 6-8 months) I deemed the tank a killer of expensive clownfish and tried the damsel after it sat fishless for a few months.

I suppose I'm going through an unsatisfied phase and thinking of things to add. I have a new spike of green hulk acropora acclimating on the back frag rack. I think I'd end up kicking myself if I added another fish.

Best determine what caused the dino showing since they likely still there and always will be before adding more fish. Oddly, my Yellowtail damsels and Domino survived my episode although all CUC except nassarius perished. Not sure latter wasn't fact was overtaken by GHA and the CUC starved because none of the turf they ate available.

The reason I got dinos in the first place is I panic-applied chemiclean to the tank for a completely different reason so it took a hit to the biological stability - that was a year ago or more, and I wouldn't do that these days. I've been running UV for months to kill off the dinos and give the other bacteria room to grow. UV has been out of the tank for about a month.

I had to baby the tank as it rebuilt the biological filter, and the clownfish were the only casualites in the end. I took out the UV too soon and the second round of clownfish died when the dinos made a return.
