I've been buying products for three, maybe four years now for my 125g mixed in-wall reef under the big screen TV in the living room. All I need is a lot of salt and heaters, build the 2x4 stand and the long stand for the hospital tank, The reef room is almost ready with a one piece vinyl sheet flooring (no more carpet) and marine paint on the walls where the tanks will be. Two large rubber trash cans are in the closet as a mixing can and a RO/DI fresh water can. I have water drains going downstairs to the house sewer drain. Four years of saving and planning the dream, might be over, and it almost makes this 62 yr old man cry. :pleading-face:

Most everything is ready to go, until two life changing events.

Back on June 5th my wife came through the door with food and I said I'll get the drinks, so I stood up from the couch, then fell back and told my wife, wow I feel weird, so I stumbled to the dinner table. I said my whole left side is numb ! I took a drink and it was like I just came home from the dentist slobbering Coke out my left mouth, and my wife said, you're having a stroke !
We live in a small town 10 mi from our Capitol City so my wife called 911. I was in the ICU for 8 days as they kept having trouble finding a round vein to get a I.V in. They tried 6 times before getting a Doctor that has a specialty with finding veins with a ultrasound type devise. My forearms were black & blue. lol

Years ago I was in a 35 mph zone in my truck when a lady rear ended me going 60 mph. It ripped all the tissues around my back skull, broke two vertebra and their disks. My specialists installed a Spinal Sord Stimulator from my tailbone to my neck. The hospital Doctors wanted me to have a MRI that shows the brain the best image possibly, but the stimulator has magnets it it and the MRI's huge magnets could rip my stimulator right out of my spine.....ouch !
So, I had a C-Scan every other day to check for and brain bleeds.

Then I was transferred to the Progressive Care Unit for 16 days and came home. FINALLLY,,,,,I thought.

After being home for 6 days, I got up out of bed and fell, then started flopping around like a fish out of water, my knees pounding down on the floor very hard and my hands, My wife was at work so I needed to get to the living room to call her. It took around 20 minutes but, by that time it was over. My knees, especially my left one hurt and was bleeding from carpet burns. I still have the scabs today. So, another 911 call to our volunteer people. They were a little confused because normannly people don't have two strokes tike me, so I had yet another C-Scan. They only show OLD strokes, like 4 to 5 days old, so I was tuk there again for another several days. Once the second scan was taken, the brain dead area was larger than the first, so that's why it'zs doubtful I had a different and second stroke stroke, but a "continuation" of the first one. Hum,....interesting. We all with I could get a MRI. Next month I have a appointment with my surgeon to ask if the stimulator can be safely, removed and it insurance will pay for it ? It doesn't work much anyway, so we believe future MRI's are more important since I'm more susceptible to future strokes now.

Anyway,....you guys know how I feel about getting to the point of crating a (almost) dream in-wall, below the living room TV, with a "reef room" behind it,. Is !!!

But my entire left side is numb. You can take a pen from the middle of my scalp, the left side is numb, my forehead, nose, cheek, jaw, li[s, neck (my man-hood is reduced about 40$) hip, ribs, left leg to my foot & toes. My left hand hurts like thousands of needels are poking it, it's numb, feels cold until I like wrap it around my walker it feels very hot. The skin is very tight. In the hospital I could not touch my thumb to any finger, but through physical therapy I can now !!!
They don't know if I'll ever have full use of it, but I won't give up !
I'm a diabetic with neurotherapy in my feet, especially my left one. It also feels like thousands of needles are poking at it and stings badly. And like steeping on a 2" et sponge. My balance,...... is very bad, I have to use my old man walker all the time.

The problem is, how do I work with tools (no table saws, chop saws etc. for sure) assemble everything to maintain all of it, or retire from this beautiful hobby ?

My uncle was a downhill skier who climbed Mt Whitney at age 75.
He had a stroke and his mobility changed drastically. It’s a difficult situation for him and it’s hard to watch the lifestyle changes and limitations on what he can do.

I want to encourage you but I don’t know how to help you move forward. I can pray but my popcorn prayers for your health are not likely to get you out of your situation, my own experience and lack of faith healing abilities are nothing to start a healing ministry that provides real healing.

But I do know a bit about the frustrations that you have expressed and I hope that you can get peace in your situation, and hopefully that will include the help you need to get the tank project resolved and looking better than my own?!

Truly sorry to read about your situation.

Sorry for ordeal. New stimulators are MRI safe if need to exchange. Finances to hire help?

Im so very sorry to hear this. Lost my grandpa to a stroke earlier this year. They are awful. He also had really bad neuropathy in his feet. I will say if this is your dream dont give up! Where there is a will there is a way.

This is nowhere close to the same thing youre experiencing but I myself had to have my elbow surgically re constructed (two on the elbow), gallbladder removal and another procedure last week. So I completely get the frustration of wanting to get my 300 fully up and running (its not plumbed because of medical issues). Ive adapted by siting and working, putting things in a an easier spot, and I use rolling carts to push items around. Again none of these issues are anywhere near or close to the seriousness of your condition. I only bring that stuff up to show you that you can manipulate things differently in a way that works for you. But overall youve got to do what is the best for you and your health/safety. I hope this helps a little

i am so sorry! that has/had to be terrifying. i know it is hard to give up on something youve looked forward to for so long. but i think with your situation, only you and your wife will know what is best. is hiring out the maintenance an option? i truly wish you the best and hope you are at peace with whatever you decide!

Sorry to hear! I too had a stroke, not as bad as yours and got into the hobby as a way to regain my finer motor skills and to exercise brain function and those bloody brain blocks. It's been pretty tuff going but i see vast improvements with building my system from scratch.
If you can keep going! Push yourself. If you cant manage to get that screw into the hole come back and try again later.
Giving up and accepting your fate brings you one foot closer to the grave. We all have to have something to aim for.:)

Yes strokes are no joke

same here, left side arm/fingers also …I empathize, I’m in my 60’s
You might be needing that tank as a therapy tool … hope you stick with it

I am so sorry all of that happened to you. I am glad despite all the hardships, you are still alive and breathing on this earth. I agree with others that I am sure local reefers in your area would be glad to help you build a tank. Heck, if I knew how to help build one and live close by I would help. I’m wishing you the best with your recovery, and prayers go out for you, and your family!

dang, so sorry to hear that.
I Hate to say it but at this point there’s not much you can do in the way of taking care of the tank or doing things for it long term once this happens. I’ve seen it before and more times then not it’s just a slow decline over the years getting worse and worse health wise. :downcast-face-with-sweat:my father just passed a few months back after having the same thing happen and then being in and out of rehab facilities for about a year or so.

I’d say your best bet at having the tank is find someone local who can get it finished and setup for you to sit back and enjoy and have someone else do the Maintanence.

I am very sorry for what you are going through. There is no reason to decide anything right now, so give it a little more time.

I had a stroke back in 2008, but it wasn't as severe as what you described. I had some left side weakness for a while and ended up with what they called "Frame cuts" in my vision. I also have some interesting cognitive quirks that I didn't understand until a few years later. They never did figure out the cause of the stroke.

For months afterward I lived in fear of every twinge thinking it was going to be another one. It took my wife even longer to get back to "Normal". She panicked everytime I missed a left turn. (A result of one of the quirks)

My point is not to diminish what you went through in any way. You had it much worse than I did. I just want to encourage you to give yourself some time to understand what your new normal is and how to work with it before you give up on a dream.
