Sump

Thinking of building my own sump as it seems the canister filter is gonna be a lot more work than just breaking down and going the sump route. So what's the typical ratio of sump to display? If I built a 10gal sump is that enough for my 42 gal display?

ten gallon may be a little snug once your equipment starts going in , protein skimmer , return pump and heater would probably be all on top of each other. Im thinking that with the drain from the display and the protein skimmer you will have a lot of bubbles going back into the display. General rule is bigger is better , so as big of a sump you can fit is best . When I can have a dedicated fish room my sump will be bigger than my display!!;Woot Remember if you build a sump out of a ten gallon aquarium you will not have ten gallons of water in it !

I would look into a 20 gallon high aquarium for the sump .
20 High 24 1/4 x 12 1/2 x 16 3/4

If I was going to run a skimmer and a small refugium may a 20 gallon long.
20 Long 30 1/4 x 12 1/2 x 12 3/4

Limited on my space is the only thing. Being a hex tank it's hard to hide anything behind the hex stand. Let alone underneath. No room for anything. If I do a 20 gallon sump for the tank it will be all up under everyone's nose

My advice is to not put much into this setup that you can't use in the future. It's very likely you will, as most every other person, get tired of the hex tank and go to something else.

+1 to this. I set up a corner pentagon and wish I had not. That's why I'm upgrading right now.

I decided to build my own sump and I has taken me 2 days to make a sock holder.. mostly cause I dont have the right equipment. I am using a dremel to cut 3/4 inch acrylic sock holes. I wish I would have bought the hole saw and call it a day. So the point is if you going to DIY just make sure you have the right equipment or don't over complicate things like I am lol.

I have made a lot of stuff DIY for my current tank. I wanted to do as much of it solo as I could.. and I am so happy I did as I feel like it's more of an accomplishment versus buying everything. On the plus side though I work for a multi billion dollar company that has about everything I could need to cut and shape my acrylic, and a boss that doesn't mind me using it as long as I do it on my time and not the company's.

I've also got a small cube sump, just enough room for a skimmer pump and heater, you've got my number.

Here are some images of my little 10 gal sump I put under my 54 gallon corner. Very simple design, just an incoming chamber, a skimmer chamber, and a return pump. Work flawlessly so far and I only have about 20 bucks in it.

Here is an image of it with the skimmer in place.. please overlook the mess.. lol. I am still in the process of making everything neat.
