So if anyone saw my previous posts I added a bubble tip to my 55 gallon tank. Already had a long tentacle in there and it was doing good. Long story short I added it too soon it looked bad and I though it killed my LTA but I ended up cleaning my filter and found it at the bottom, that was my cause for a fish die off. Well got everything clean all parameters in check and now my tank stinks so bad, the water. I cleaned the filter again and the bio balls also smell super badddd. Had some algae build up that’s looking better cleaned the filter the best I could rinsed the bio balls and changed foam pads as well as adding two carbon bags in the filter and one on top of the skimmer. Any other ideas or just give that time? Will the bio balls always stink now?

I use a combination of carbon and UV sterili
Is it because it’s a new tank again, 3-4 months old? Will it go away with out a uv ster… I mean if I don’t have a fan blowing out the window it takes your breath away in the room. Never stank before cleaning the filter after finding the dead LTA

Well during that process of cleaning you may have stirred up more detritus and release more than you think. Do you have a bacterial bloom? Green water? These things will cause it to smell. I would suction up all detritus. Clean up the sand and then do a WC. That should help the smell on top of carbon.

Do good water changes, add carbon. Also you shouldn't have to clean your biofilter media. It could potentially strip the bacteria off. UVC or UV sterilizing is a good option, but it will effect your copepods and beneficial bacteria that may end up around the UVC light.

Best option is water changes and carbon in my opinion.

So I’ve been seeing a lot about copepods. I have never added any could that be part of the issue? Also since I have cleaned it is it ok just going to take time to build back up or have I made a big mistake. I cleaned everything so much because originally the lots was dead in the bottom for a long time but two the smell

If you have live rock in the display, you don't need bioballs or foam pads. Easier to keep them clean by not having them. Instead run disposible floss you can change every few days and a bag of carbon.

Dying nems smell REALLY bad (snails too).

I have a eheim canister, I started with 40lbs dry? rock then added another idk 10lbs of rock from a local pet store, already live and purple. So how do you suggest setting the filter up like what layers or such

Copepods don't really do much other than add a food source for your fish and coral. More often then not you will have some pods hitchhiker on a coral.

Nope, I did before I cleaned everything so I’ve been running lights off, tank looks pristine today like perfect but still smells

Nope, I did before I cleaned everything so I’ve been running lights off, tank looks pristine today. I had a lot of algae on bottom and me being a newb it def looked similar to dino so I did about a 50% water change, white lights off yesterday and lights off completely today and looks awesome

That is not true at all. They are the ultimate CUC and algae eaters.
