Does it sink bad?

Carbon would work.

It doesn’t matter which skimmer it is when I’m just asking if a bag of carbon on top will do anything, I mean should it be wet? Fine particle or will that inhibit the holes?

Clean the skimmer more often. What you smell is likely rotting skimmate.

Okay I see you're also mentioning ozone.

A bag of carbon on top of the skimmer will reduce any excess ozone smell.

You also have to consider that you need to remove any byproducts created by ozone that will contaminate the tank water.

For that purpose you should direct the water flow out of the skimmer over a bed of activated carbon.

If you don't see yours, he can custom make one for you as long as you provide measurements + photos of your lid.
It does a great job for odors but I found a skimmer to be a poor way of employing ozone for me since ozone will escape through the water output and it was difficult to capture any possible byproducts of ozone reacting with various seawater components (no real way I know of measuring it)

Not wet. Stink Sink you want the carbon to be dry. Placing a bag of carbon won't do the same thing unless you can force the air through the bag.

Question: does it stink when it's running or when you go to clean it?

I certainly used GAC on the air effluent where ozone might get released when I used it. Also on the water effluent, though I never used ozone in my skimmer.

IME a bag of carbon is fine. Correct me if I am wrong... but the ozone reacts with anything it comes into contact with - so it should not require a proprietary product. As far as the smell test goes... I found that a bag of carbon worked... and even an old filter pad with carbon in it (from a power filter I was not using), also worked.

If you are using an air pump to push the air into a recirculating skimmer, you might try slowing down the airflow on the pump with a simple valve. I found that when I ran too much flow - it pushed too much air out the top of the skimmer (which increased the ozone smell in the room and also... dry skimmate would creep out of the hole and clog it). A bit of trial and error here.
