Hi I just started using gfo on august 26 and it has been keeping phosphates under .20 until recently. I checked it today and the phosphates were at 0.47. Corals look okay (I have mainly sps). What would you guys recommend. Should I replace the gfo?

Yeah, it will exhaust quickly at first. You do have to put new stuff in at some point. Now, if you haven’t stopped the cause of the PO4, then you will keep changing it out faster than you should. For example, I held out as long as I could but I just had to start running some. I screwed up and put too many pallets in my flake mix that I use in my AFS. I’m waiting for new flake to get here. Once I replace the flake, and my PO4 has come down, I’ll shut my GFO pump off and monitor it daily. I didn’t want to run it as it also strips out trace. So to counter I’ve been dosing A &K to offset it (total swag). I want to read up on phos guard (I think that’s it) as I want to find something that might not be as harsh as GFO.

Take it easy, obviously you know your tank better than anyone else but try not to over do it. If you’re gonna replace it, do it well below the recommended amount and monitor from there. Eventually you’ll be able to calculate how much gfo you need and when to replace it to keep your phosphate level at your desired target.

I only started using GFO recently as well and that was suggested to me.
