I have a Nyos quantum 180 that comes with a drain tube for the cup. I was using it to reduce the number of times a week I had to empty the cup, I had the tube drain into a 30L jerry can that was placed on the floor next to the sump. One day I was out, and a piece of algae blocked the air intake tube, and then the skimmer basically flooded my appartment, emptying the foul contents of the jerry can onto my floor and soaking into my downstairs neighbours appartment. this never happened in my previous tank which i had for 2 years, with a Buble Magus curve 5 skimmer, didnt even know this was a risk. I left it regularly for weeks while travellng and i never had this happen.

I have since learned that this is a known thing about skimmers, but then what the heck is the point in this drain tube? If you want to go away from the house over the weekend it is very dangerous to use this with an external container. Far better to let the cup overflow into your sump then onto your floor? It seems the product should not be sold with the drain tube unless they also offer a float switch cut off system (which they can afford to with the price i paid for this skimmer). Am i missing something?

I have had this skimmer for 2 months and I am going to replace it anyway because it keeps getting clogged and will not perform consitently, same with my friend who has the same model. I am really dissappointed with Nyos, i tried several of their products and they are all ****, especially their reef cement.

Any skimmer air intake being blocked will cause the skimmer to go in overdrive.

Most skimmers have drain tubes as well. You could drill a hole at the top of the cap and put in your own drain tube that goes back into the tank

How is the air intake being clogged with algae? It’s external and out of the water

Yes

All true

Perhaps a smaller container, inside the sump. Perhaps like a 4000ml cylinder.

That you can eyeball to see what's in. When to change and clean it

Obviously one installs float switches or level sensors to help prevent floods like this. In the skimmer cup. In the skimmate reservoir.

Avast makes a container just for this purpose. Other may as well
