I have seen too many conflicting experiences with mechanical media such as this and that has kept me from adding any to my systems. IMHO if you have an efficient export system set up (oversized skimmer, and carbon and GFO if needed) you shouldn't have the need for such media. I have not found the need for it at least. If anything I am at a point where I need to dose NO3 to aid my SPS coloration. Just my two cents...

Thanks for the reply yash!

My concern/ reason for use would be that I'm trying to go for a very minimal rock scape with this tank.

The pond sized version can be up to 40x more efficient than live rock. Keep in mind I'd still have to keep phosphate in check by other means (GFO) as this media is pretty much for nitrate removal.

I have used Siporax successfully in my last three set ups. When set up correctly it performs just like additional LR, but with so much more surface for bacteria. Right now I have 10 Liters in my 190 gal. NPS system, heavily feed with 18 fish in it. It took about 8 weeks for it to start working , but right now my NO3 are less then 10 ppm and PO4 less then 0.3 ppm. Keep in mind I don't use any other filtration media. WC is done about 4 to 6 weeks - 50 gal.

Ive been trying "de*nitrate" by Seachem, which is basically the same thing I think. It took a few weeks to establish but seems to be working just as described. It absorbs nitrate and can be left in aquarium to provide more surface area for bacteria to live on. Water test today showed no signs of nitrates. Something worth checking out is, Bulk Reef Supply sells a product called "Marine Pure", it's supposed to be more porous than most live rock and excellent for bacteria. They make em in a few different shapes and sizes for easy sump/filter fitment. Hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply! Which method did you use? Tossed it in you sump, in a bag, or a eggcrate box? Did you add it to an established system or from the start? Thanks in advance!

Thanks!

I've looked into the marine pure blocks, and read quite a few threads where a ridiculous amount of aluminum showed up in Triton testing street using them. Scary!

Our European partners in the hobby seem to really like this product (siporax) and use the large size made for ponds.

My worry is, if I stay the tank with it, pulling it out later could be detrimental!

Thanks Josh!

You use 1 little bag? Most folks use a formula to get a gram weight to use.

I built a eggcrate box, and it is in last compartment in my sump. This way no detritus gets in there and it stays clean. I added some Biodigest bacteria to help seed it. I also have slow flow through my sump.

If I start with siporax from the initial fillingof the tank, wouldn't it just cycle with the tank? Im going to use some bacteria to seed for sure as well. @M&M

@Zoarium , have you ever had a triton test or have any unexplainable issues with your system agree using the marine pure blocks?

Sorry if my post was confusing, Ive never used Marine pure before. Ive only heard mixed reviews about it from around the community. I would be interested to see how it matches up against the Siporax. Im definitely going to read up on this more.

Those Brazilians... They have some amazing looking sps tanks, with truckloads of siporax in them for NO3/PO4 control. Look up Roberto Lopes and Carlinhos Moreno.
