Just set up this Fluval pico reef just over a week ago. I used some coral gravel and added mature water and a couple of corals from my main tank. To give the filter bacteria an extra boost I have been adding NT Labs Live Filter Bacteria. I have added 2 clowns and 2 red legged hermits. I replaced the stock pump as I felt it just didnt give enough flow. It now has one of the little Tunze mini pumps which gives an adequate 300lph for this tank size. I have done 2 x 1ltr water changes since Ive set it up, fish and corals are looking happy so its going well so far. The stock light is pretty poor for reef use so I managed to pick up a great wee inano led unit made by Cherry Lumi. Its an 18w Cree led unit. Two Little Fishies Nano Mag
Here's a couple of pics to let you see what its like. The pics dont really do it justice and are actually brighter than you see in the pics but you get the idea. I'm well impressed with it.

Excuse the coke can :whistling:

Just in case anyone thinks its cruel to have these 2 small clowns in a tank this size. They are only in there short term until I set up a aquaone aquanano 40 for them. I'll probably replace them with a small goby and a couple of sexy shrimps.

That is a good approach indeed as they get large real quick as you well know ...

Not sure if this qualifies as nano but it's nano compared to a 200gallon.

Yes it is IMO ... I usually define Nanos as anything up to 40 gallon Breeder or smaller ones with a sump that brings the water volume up to about 4-45 gallons, so IMO yours still qualifies as a Nano, and as you say especially when you compare it to a 55, 75 or larger reef tank .... Often a determining factor would be whether most of the filtration is HOB or in a sump of say 15 to 20 gallons, but of course there are many varying opinions on what a nano really is ... the key is really what you as the owner consider it to be and whether you take care of it like people take care of a Nano, as described in my new book released in April of this year (see link in my signature) ...

Great looking !

12g Nanoreef. Zooanthids, Ricordia, Star Polyps and two clownfish. CF Lighting, 75% actinic blue, 25% 10,000k white.

Nice set up for a nano .... How much total light do you have over that Nano ? I see the wavelengths but not the total strength and what kind of CF lighting you are using. I use two CFT/CFL's rated at 6500 K over my 20 G and one 6500 K over a 10 gallon which I started setting up a while ago and in which there is not much life form yet, a few CUC's, a couple of red Actinodiscus Mushrooms and 2 Pavona cactus frags. using a Tetra HOB filter with extra insert of a small piece of Poly Filter, and I changed the carbon in one of the standard inserts to Aluminum oxide for PO4 and silicate removal and added some filter floss for mechanical filtration. Tank as aragonite substrate of fine size, but not sugar sand type, and I have a few pieces of live rock in it for Bio filtration ... no HH's so far that I have seen except for 1 Asterina Star ... must have come in on one of the small pieces of rock the mushroom was attached to. I run a blog on it on a UK web site : marine habitat ... which has an online presence but also publishes a printed magazine fo which I write articles as well, and if course I follow the approach described in my April of this book (448p.) "Nano-Reef Aquariums" .. for more detail click in the image in my signature. So far so good, and I think that next I will be adding a Bicolor Blenny as I have already added a barnacle shell for it to find a safe place in, which is what the one in my 20 G nano does.

After that I may add a Duncan maybe or a Candy Cane .. have not decided on that yet, right now the tank is running well and I am giving the filters a rest to allow them to catch up well on the life forms that are now in the tank ...

here is a recent fts of my 29 gallon with 15 gallon long sump.

Looking good ... lots of rock though ... and with a sump you may not need as much as you have so you can clear up some space in the tank, but that is just my opinion, others amy not agree but lately I have been moving towards less rock and rely more in the substrate and what is left of the rock for Bio filtration and as long as the tank is not overloaded or overfed that should IME suffice... but up to you of course .... you can read a lot about nano's in my enw book (448p.) Nano-Reef Aquariums (click on the image in my signature for more info) ... Good looking tank though ... I like.
