By having a stand that's large enough to do it.

Behind door #2 is a 20L that's the same size as the tank you want to use as a sump.

If this is for your 40b tank, you either need to upsize the stand to have enough room to fit in larger reservoir, or find a reservoir that can fit in your spare space. Probably the best option there is Red Sea's new Reef Can reservoirs. The 18 liter model is only 3.5" wide. It does need a good amount of vertical space, but you probably have more of that than you do horizontal space.

Have you picked up a stand yet?

Customized sump and ATO reservoir. I found the largest aquariums I could that would fit together in the space which happened to be a 7 gallon and a 4 gallon under my 30 long

It hasn’t quite caught up with the hobby yet, but a lot of liquid handling in the chemical and pharma industry has transitioned to flexible bags like these, rather than rigid containers. I think this would be a great application for one. You could hang the bag from above the sump. They make them in a variety of sizes from 2 liters all the way up to hundreds of liters. If you search for them, make sure to use metric sizing (liters) since we don’t use gallons in scientific/technical applications.
