Should I get an external plumbing box for my overflow?

Hello all thank you in advance for any help. I bought a used tank. It came with a built-in overflow but only two outlines. Should I get an external box that will let me add a third drain line to the sump? Or is it okay as is?

Kind of a matter of preference. Its perfectly safe with 2 drains. I’m struggling to get my bearings on the photos though. Is that the side or bottom of the overflow with holes?
Back top of the tank. First time I've had a tank with two drain lines. Thank you I always assumed the box was a requirement for a back/side overflow

Ah, ok. In that case you might want the box for noise. I don’t see how you would get those 2 holes on the side running a full siphon. But I have never run a setup like this, so maybe someone else will chime in.

If you don't have enough water in your pump chamber to flood your tank

Or enough in your DT drain chamber to flood your sump

Do you really even need a third drain?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 3 drain setups, say Bean Animal, were with sumps on a lower floor. Where there was enough water in the pipes to flood either the sump or DT if there was a clog

IMHO, get an external box. plumb it Bean Animal. Most of the external overflows have 3 lines to the bottom for that. Looks like you have 2" or bigger holes in the glas. Good enough for high flow. You need find which manufacturer assembly fits your build and needs or build a box yourself.

I've never run a setup like this before either. The seller had several stories when I communicated with them so I'm not sure what is true.

Valid. It's all going to be on a "stand" so not a lot of extra water that would be unaccounted for. And I'll certainly be water testing to see if it's an issue before I go too far down the rabbit hole

The plumbing is all 1.5" internal so not exactly high flow. I would guess somewhere between 1000-1200 GPH. Tank is acrylic so drilling isn't a huge issue but with how close together those holes are I would be concerned about expanding them.

I think a box is a good idea, but would leave it a 2 drain style like a herbie. I’ve been running a herbie with 2 drains from my DT all the way down to my basement sump for almost 10 years without issue on my 120g. Dead silent when tuned properly with a gate valve. I use 1 inch pipe and it is plenty of turnover. I wouldn’t call 1.5 inches on the small side regarding plumbing. That’s more than enough IMO.

Also, those holes are very close. Need to make sure there is room for the bulkhead flanges to fit next to each other.

Might do that then. I’ve got time just trying to figure out the best option. The bulkheads do fit. I’ve tested that

How big is the tank?

Acrylic, so probably pretty big

Where two 1.5" are not enough. Honestly, if it's that big I would put a second output box over to the side
It’s a 150 not that big. I’m thinking I’m going to go with the box and 2 drains instead of 3. Return is on the other side of the tank and I’m fairly certain that my sump can handle the extra water from the plumbing if I somehow lose power

It all depends on the size tank you have.
1.5" allows for
  • 1.5 inch: 35 GPM = 2100 GPH. with 2 of them 4200 GPH !!! You will never use that much.
Thats way enough. Unless you have a monster tank

Measure your tank and determine size.

I got some quotes and I think I'm going to go with modular marine for a setup that will allow a durso and matches the holes already drilled.

Great. It's a very good system. I use the same brand one because I wanted it flush with the top.
They offer "slightly blemished" gear for a lot less. I baut my 1600 mph for 50% less. All it had was a tiny round scratch on the side facing the tank. Can't see it there anyhow.
mine runs dead silence.
