Hello Reef2Reef community, I am Ned to the hobby and have been slowly adding lifestock to my one month old tank. As recommended by forum members I ordered quarantined fish from Dr. Reef. I ordered four fish, all came in looking great and well packed. I believe I have one major issue with the two clownfish I ordered and wanted to check here to make sure I am not crazy.

Specifically, I ordered two Da Vinci Clownfish Grade A. I believe Grade A is defined as a specimen which has two white fused stripes on each side of the body. As shown in the picture below each of the two fish have one side where there is no fused stripes. I believe this makes the these two fish Grade B specimen. I have reached out to customer service to confirm but I wanted to post here just to make sure I am analyzing things correctly.

Well, you got the Da Vinci Clowns but they’re most likely grade B - I’m not sure what Defines Grade A as I’ve seen some grade A’s with no fused bar (Not my photo);

I did some searching around and according to a 2013 article by Jake Adams the Davinci line of designer clownfish was created by Sea & Reef Aquaculture. According to Sea & Reef, "grade A have two fused stripes on each side of the body." See https://www.seaandreef.com/marine-ornamental-fish/clownfish/davinci-clownfish-grade-a. I have seen this standard described in several other places so I assume this is the commonly accepted criteria for grade A.

Honestly, I don’t really bother with the Grades, I prefer the Grade ‘F’ clowns that have misbare or no bars at all. It’s why I like my Black Photon (Old photo);

I would say, if you like the fish then keep with them but if you don’t then trade them on and wait until you get a Grade A pair.

I feel ya. For the most part I am planning to start with pretty basic fish but decided to pay a little bit more for the Davinci clowns since they are named after my favorite artist and I liked the extra white of the Grade A. I assume these fish "work fine" but it's disappointing to order a beef burger then get served a chicken sandwich.

Update: Dr. Reef team responded very quickly and said they will refund due to the packing error. Now I got to figure out what to do with the fish!
