I just realised that I am seeing two different recommendations. My SG gauge says 1.020 to 1.023 is the ideal range, but others are saying 1.023 to 1.026 is recommended?

If I measure the ocean where I live, it is about 1.021.

I must have missed something. Is it a temperature compensation thing or something?

Most devices compensate. Though you should always measure salinity at the same temp.

Salinity is one of those things that work different for others. It also depends if your doing a FOWL tank or coral.
If its coral you want it on the ball park of 1.026. For FOWL I've seen people go low as 1.017 to 1.023.

Ocean salinity levels can vary depending where its pulled.

Also to add I've had my tank operate between 1.024 and 1.026 without any issues.

Typically, fish-only aquariums have a salinity range of 1.018 to 1.020, while reef aquariums maintain a salinity of 1.025. The rationale is that lower salinity levels can reduce the susceptibility of fish to ich and other parasites. However, this reduced salinity can also stress invertebrates and corals, which is why reefs are recommended to be at natural near reef salinities of around 1.025

Having just done a major water change - I am sitting at 1.021 - tank target mostly soft corals and inverts and minimal fish.

Guess I'll let it creep up a bit then...
