I’ve started to buy the equipment that will go into my 150 g display build. Return pumps, fleece roller, skimmer, and power heads.

I initially thought I would go bare bottom, but now I am leaning towards a Reborn substrate to assist with the cycling, and will decide if I keep it as my substrate long term or maybe pick it up and put it into a calcium reactor down the road once I’ve established the tank.

My question is… at what point should I add in the fleece roller and skimmer? I would think I should add this once I get to a point of adding corals and fish as I wouldn’t want to pull out any healthy bacteria I’m trying to establish with the cycle process. Is this a good train of thought, or should I add the filter roller and skimmer from the jump?

Thanks,

Mike

Substrate and the impact on the cycle is minimal and shouldn't be a main focus. Nor is worrying about a skimmer or fleece roller being detrimental to bacteria. Add them once nitrate needs to be managed more than water changes do.
