Im building an Innnovative Marine 112INT tank. I chose the VarioS 8, but Im thinking its way over kill. IM recommended a pump rate of 1120-2240GPH. The VarioS 8 is 2700GPH - The VarioS 4 is 1056 GPH

The tank has just 1 return and its 3/4", so with the VarioS 8, I have to step it down from 1 1/4" to 3/4"

If I went with the VarioS 4, then it has a 1" slip or 3/4" barb.

Either pump can be controlled with a Hydros, but only the 4 can be part of the Kraken (eliminating the power brick and being able to run it off the battery)

I also plan to run a UV via closed loop into the return.

The tank will have 2 IceCap 2K Gyres

Should I exchange the 8 for a 4?

I would just run the varios 8 at like 1/2 to 3/4 speed. This will make it much quieter than running the varios 4 at 100%

If you want to use the pump on a Kraken, yeah I would suggest the Varios 4. Its a 24V core pump that will also run at 12V battery. The Varios 8 is a 36V pump and doesnt work great at 12V battery.

Also the Varios 4 can be run off a Wave Engine as well, so if you wanted to ditch the controller and integrate it further into Hydros you could. Then you can power the Wave Engine off the Kraken. On one of my tanks I have a Varios 4 return, a Varios 2S skimmer, and 2 Reef Octo Pulse 2 on one wave engine, cuts down on power supplies and controllers.

Thanks for your help. And it wouldnt hurt to pick up a VarioS 2 to use for possible reactors, and have as a back up in case the 4 ever failed. Just to keep some flow going. I just think if Im going the Kraken route, I should have a pump that runs off of it in case of a power outage.
