I was visiting the in-laws in Washington state last week and brought back some seaweed from the Puget Sound. Sound to freezer was 10 minutes, then cooler bag home. It was a long flight and it thawed (but stayed cold) before getting it home. It's back in the freezer now but beginning to smell spicy(?). Doesn't smell rotten; the Mrs. describes it as "wet green things".

Tangs were eating it last night, not going crazy for it, but not afraid. I haven't seen what's left today. When I took what was left from the first feeding out (what can't be gotten to in the feeder) it didn't have the rank sulfur smell I have come to know and hate from old nori. I noticed no smell from the tank stuff.

Here's the question: what's the smell? How do I make is stop? Does it indicate danger?

I may dry it outside when it stops raining out here, unless it's unsafe.

It sounds like your seaweed smells like seaweed :face-with-tears-of-joy:

Typically bad things smell bad - if it just smells like “wet green things”, I would consider that normal because, well, they are wet green things!

Well that's interesting, open bracket, s, closed bracket strikes through everything after it. Look at that.

Thanks for the response. Should it be so strong while in the freezer though? I'd figure it should smell like the ocean.

Guess I'll try to seal it better so I don't flavor the ice cream.

Ya maybe double bag it for your own comfort, but I wouldn’t worry too much about it harming the tank.
