I actually take exception to this statement. 'RIch people' hire accountants who have financial literacy to interpret the law as written. It is not the 'rich person's' fault because congress writes laws the way they do. If you want a tax law to not be subject to interpretation make the rules black and white...but they dont. They leave them ambiguous for a reason. The reason that they target poor people is the fact that there is a higher degree of outright tax evasion (lying) for people that need the money. yes the dollars are smaller on an individual level, but the fact is the amount of people that dont hire accountants but cheat...the numbers are pretty huge. Although there are a few well published cases of rich tax cheats, the majority of the rich actually try to follow the poorly worded rules on advice of their accountants, whos entire job is to interpret and properly apply the tax law. I can tell you as a matter of fact, that a majority if not a super majority of accountants try to follow the rules to the best of their ability.
that was tricky oneCorrect!
I dont agree with that statement at all. I have several examples but to oversimplify..
When I was younger I got hit with a tax lean against my social... for taxes owed that didn't belong to me. Legit IRS said I owed 6k in taxes that technically should have been charged to someone else. Every lawyer I spoke w said "yeah easy case to win but I will charge you more to represent you... so it's cheaper to just pay the 6k"... I didn't have the cash and worked for a fortune 500. So they just took money out every check to pay it off.
Fast forward to earlier this year, one of my brothers clients got charged with money laundering after being investigated by the IRS. I promise you his biggest mistake was not paying proper amount in taxes... but in the end I doubt he will get 20 years (what he is being charged) and will probably walk away with fines and 5 years. (We will have to wait for the outcome)
But point of the story is... average poor person is hit with 10k, 20k, 30k etc... how many people have to be hit with to accumulate say 10 million in back taxes? 1 rich person might owe 10 million in taxes for just 1 year.... this is what leads to the disparity imo.
