I have been washing my socks by hand. . . got me thinking about switching to reef diaper or cup + filter floss. . .

I know a lot of people wash there socks in bulk with a washing machine, but how likely is it that detergent/other contaminants from previous loads of laundry might get on the socks? Also do I need to pre-rinse the socks? How to you store them in between washes?

I wash my socks in the machine. It’s the best solution for me. I find detergent doesn’t stay in the machine, but liquid fabric softener does, so I don’t use them anymore (they aren’t even good for clothes tbh).

And our machine has definitely had softeners in it from time to time. . .

I run some bleach in a quick empty cycle first to clear anything out of the washer system. Then run my socks through 2 bleach cycles. Then an extra rinse cycle with no bleach. It might be excessive, but I find that the safest for me and I haven’t had any issues.

Initially, remove from sump, turn inside out and rinse. Set them aside until I have at least four which does not take long with two tanks. Pop them in the washer with hot water and double rinse. Air dry. I may or may not use bleach. Been doing this for years. Tried reef diapers, but socks are no more trouble (for me).

I make a 5 gallon bucket of bleach and r.o water and keep them for about a week or so in there, they will be bright white and hose them off, they will clean right up, then into a bucket of r.o water to soak over night, and just spin cycle in the machine a day or so later they will be readyto go. :)

Washing machine with bleach and any fish towels. I run hot, extra rinse and do it about 2-3 cycles. Then 1 or 2 rinse cycles. Sometimes I'll add prime to the last rinse

5 gallon bucket of RO/DI and bleach.

Turn inside out, rinse in sink, throw in bleach bucket. When I'm down to my last one, I simply throw them all into the washing machine, run a regular cycle, turn right side out, and air dry.

Been doing it that way for the better part of 30 years, and have never had an issue.

Bleach is pretty benign and will off gas in a short amount of time.
