IMHO in a tank balanced out with fast growing macro algae and with no water changes, tap water is basically a non issue. definately for a fish only tank.

The macro algaes will filter out nasties including copper.

But you will still have to dose things.

One other thing that is being left out here is. Personal health benefits from RO water. You can make your own bottled water for drinking. When used to make your coffee in the morning you can use up to 2/3 less coffee grounds to get the same strength coffee. If you make Kool-Aide for your children you use less than 1/2 the sugar and still have supper sweet Kool-aide (or any other powdered drink for that matter). Cooking vegetables with RO water the vegies have more natural flavor. Making your own bottled water alone will likely pay for the RO unit in 90 days or less. Just some food for thought when thinking an RO unit is to much money.

most tap water varies in quality thru the year as well. just b/c its ok today doesnt mean it will necessarily be ok tomorrow. particularly in agricultural areas.

RO is the way to go for sure. IT is filtered pretty thoroughly and typically lacks many of the nutrients and metals tat tap water has (which can lead to algae blooms).
