I have a very nice looking regal, about 3.5".. Orange belly version..

Introduced him into the tank about 3 months ago... I didnt have coral at the time but I started to add, and he started to nip at Zoas and Palys... Basically destroyed anything similar I put into the tank... So I was like, Okay lets get SPS and things he wont bother...

Well, I noticed my Haddoni started moving a lot all of a sudeen and now he is hiding inbetween some rocks.. I caught the regal nipping at the Haddoni now. That may be the last straw.. I caught him and put him in an acclimation box to decide what to do.

Thinking of rehoming him and maybe try another regal, or should I just give up on regals? I had two other ones that didn't bother my haddoni but they did pick on zoas from time to time... not like this guy.. he would destroy a colony fast.

So basically, question is... what are my odds I will get one that doesnt nip? 50/50 or more like 10/90?

To put it bluntly? Do not buy a fish or coral that you are not willing to accept either side of the 50/50 behavior scale.

It really comes down to the simple truth of the collateral damage of removing. It won't go willingly in most cases which means stress for me, stress for the display, stress for people living in my house from my bad mood, stress for my neighbors who see me outside kicking a bush all the while smirking saying he has a bad actor in the display, and then busting up my reef or aquascape to catch the poo head.

TL; DR - I buy it accepting the risk. Also I buy those fish last since the reef structure is large enough to handle the nips and tucks.

Edit: this is just how I manage my display be it coral or fish.

They all have a personality and unfortunately, the one u homed has a taste for corals, even nems. Haddoni have a potent sting and a re sticky. Risky lol. Most wild collected do. I enjoy mine but she’s kept in a Fowlr. Beautiful fish, it’s just keeping things in the correct lanes sometimes. Good luck. Keep the fish. Get a Fowlr

I have a few potential coral nippers: regal, rock beauty, et but IME the best medicine is a full belly. I’ve learned you cant ever let them go exploring when hungry.
I hate to join in but the choice is fish or corals….perhaps try another regal.

They will probably eat corals. Lots of vendors actually put cheap LPS and softies in the holding tank for them to eat since they can be challenging to eat

i cant think

Almost every angel is going to decimate Zoas.
However most other coral should be safe - I have my Regal with specific coral I know I can keep with my other fish (Torches, Hammers, Goniopora, Mushrooms etc.)
If there anre any specific corals you want to keep and angels don’t nip at it then I would honestly sacrifice the corals you can’t keep.

I would do what cant think said. Add stuff he won't straight devour. I have a bicolor angel and he nips at everything. So I don't get polyp extension. Everything still grows just slower. Find out what he won't straight devour add it and roll. He too cool a fish to give up on
