My luck using a chaeto fuge has always been good. Never had any issues with flow, lighting or growing macro. I have never ran a large fuge just a small section of diy sumps and nutrient control was effective. My current and/new setup has a fuge but I ended up making it on the small side due to size and space constraints. After all my time reefing I would suggest the largest fuge possible, space and budget are limiting factors here. The most lighting possible, PC, T5, MH, LED all work very well 3-8k being the best spectrum for macro growth. Flow should be moderate and steady in a fuge. I prefer moderate flow from one end of the fuge to the other.
