So I switched over from socks to a reefmat about 3 weeks ago. But now I get a funky smell from the take up reel as once the used mat is out of the water, it’s open season on the fish odour.
I threw in some activated carbon to see if that helped but it didn’t.

Anyone else smelling this issue?

I've noticed that if I have a dinos reemergence, the mat will stink more than usual ... but once the part that's out of the water dries out, you usually can't smell it until you open the sump cabinet door and take a huge whiff.

Interesting. Do you live in an area with high relative humidity? I don't have a reel filter and this was my original concern when they became a thing.

Why would you take a huge whiff?

Actually quite the opposite in terms of humidity. Very low humidity and dry and hot weather, so air con on most of the time which in itself pulls moisture. I never got any smell from the socks, but my guess is that it was because they were never exposed to the air.

And funny, no big sniffs are required to waft in the smell of the fish butt. :)

That's not what I would have predicted at all. Maybe since your air is dry and filtered the tank stank is more obvious in the atmosphere?

Now we need an evaluation of the bacteria that are present (or ab-scent) in the system and on the roller itself.

Is this a fish only tank? How many fishes, and gallons/liters are present?

Exactly. If you pull out a sock and let it sit it stinks too, at least until they dry out. The problem is reefmats are constantly being rewetted with more stinky gooed up mat so the stink stays.

The next version will have a hair drier that comes on for a minute after the reel advances. :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:

This makes scents.

Haha. Total scents.

Yeah, I think it’s honestly a design flaw and something I wouldn’t have predicted to be any sort of issue. But now that it’s happening it makes sense as to why. Perhaps the take up reel should have a plastic encasing keeping any scent local. It would mean an extra step when refilling but it would be worth it. Perhaps this is an idea for all those 3D reef printers out there to make a few bucks with. All I ask is I get a free one for coming up with the idea :)

It’s a well stocked 75g tank with coral and fish. But at only a year and a bit old, the bioload is in the medium category as most of the animals were purchased small/ frags and slowly growing.

Interesting. I wonder how many other people have noticed these fish tank odors and would never have a tank in their house because of it? I don’t think I have ever heard of that scenario before but it seems like it is a possibility?

Agreed 100%. I’ve read online some mention of it, but maybe most don’t care enough to post. Definitely not a deal breaker as the pros outweigh the cons, nevertheless, it would be nice to not try to hide the aroma from the wife, who already isn’t a fan of my mistress.
Actually, a mistress would likely be cheaper than this tank…

I went to get corals from 2 people that ran reefmats and when they opened up the stand oh boy what a scent. I sniffed the bag water when I got home and nothing out of the ordinary. The room didnt smell not that I noticed anyway until the stand was open. The first one I went to I thought the guy farted something nasty. The second one was a little more down to earth and cracking jokes so I asked " is that smell from the reefmat?" He said "yeah sorry about that my wife hates it when I do maintenance". I think its a common thing that most people dont talk about or have become used to it.

Ahhhhh, so the real story is how many reefers are in the polite society and we don’t talk about how badly fartz and these toilet rolling filters stink when they are used.

I need a shower myself but I think I might skip it and go to the fish shop and see if they notice?

I have two reef mats from Red Sea on my 440 gal reef aquarium. These filters work really great beside the bad smell they produce in the air from the dirty fleece. Because the dirty fleece roll and dry on the take up shaft it allow it to dry the fleece and this is where the smell come from.

If I can make a suggestion to Red Sea to resolve the situation with the bad smell, just supply a kind of kit in which the fleece on the take up shaft will stay in a bucket of water under the take up shaft or provide a close container to keep the dirty fleece inside or a close container with water in it to prevent the bad odor from escaping. I'm pretty sure this will resolve the problem of odor coming from a dry fleece.

I sent my three suggestions to Red Sea and I'm curious to see what their response will be. If you have any other ideas, just sent it to the Red Sea. I'm pretty sure that if many of us complaint and bring suggestions, they will take action and modify the equipment.
