This rainbow acan (Collector’s Coven from Carolina Aquatics), ha started growing new heads but I’m noticing that they aren’t showing the green in the middle like the original head has. Is this normal or is it morphing? I have it in the sandbed sitting under around 130 PAR (LED’s and T5’s).

So unfortuantly Acans (especially ones with more than 2 colors) commonly keep only 1-2 colors. They lose the others typically beacuse theyre under different intensities and spectrums of light. If youd like to try to get the green back, you can contact the place you got it from and ask them for as much info about the lighting this coral got when they had it. Then you can try to recreate that lighting and the coral may get those colors back.

I doubt they will offer much info. It came directly from Carolina Aquatics and was basically a mariculture colony that they cut up and sold til gone.

The baby polyps on mine are usually a slightly different colour until they get bigger. Fingers crossed yours will colour in but I hope you update this thread in a couple of months to let us know (with more pics). Good luck.

I’ll definitely do my best to keep it updated.

Can acans grow multiple heads at the same time?

It’s growing very slowly but so far still hasn’t taken on the green in the middle.
I've heard of color morphs that happen in new environments, or under different brand of lighting. Let me ask, can acans grow multiple heads at the same time?

Yeah, it seems common for acans (Micromussa) to go one or 2 colors in aquaculture so I guess I should have expected it. And yeah they can grow multiple heads at once. This one has 3 new ones that are still growing since I got it.

That's what's up! I bid on my ultra acan lord because no one else had, and it was the end of the auction. Now, I want a whole acan garden! There's nothing I don't like about them.

I’ve started a nice garden of them as well. Only one more on my “next to get” list and that’s a holy grail (I’m sure I won’t stop there though).

It is possible that if you saw a whole colony of 50 heads, the green could be randomly scattered. Some might grow it and others might not…could be completely normal. If it’s retaining the colors I wouldn’t move it.

You can feed to make them grow faster

I just started feeding mine mysisshrimp, and it's already had 3 tiny baby heads pop out of the edge! How often can I feed them? They typically poop around 24 hours after eating a healthy amount. Is every other day too often with mysis? I know reef roids should only be done once a week. I had to learn that the hard way...

I personally only feed mine once or twice a week just to ensure that the previous feeding has been broken down completely and not fouling in the mantle.
