Question 6:
life sciences fish GIF

There’s a deep-sea fish known for its bioluminescence, which uses a natural light source to lure its prey in the dark, deep ocean. This fish has a unique adaptation that allows it to survive in the extreme pressures and cold temperatures of the deep sea, but it also has a very unusual mating strategy that’s quite rare in the animal kingdom.

Name this fish and describe its bizarre mating strategy, which involves a significant physical transformation of the male.

Hint: This fish was famously portrayed in a popular animated movie, but its real-life behavior is even more fascinating and strange.

Lionfish and they will prop next to the female and look upwards while on his fins, circle the female multiple times, and going up towards the top of the water, and then the female will release her egg sacks.

Pictured is a lion fish, but not the bioluminescent one they're asking about.

Angler fish.

When he finds her, he will bite into her and remain attached to her head, belly, near her tail, or other accessible spots. His tiny mouth dissolves into the female's skin, and essentially the two become one.
