If anything it looks super similar. Ain't no way $600 is worth.

We gotta stop paying the hype prices y'all.

There was a guy named Eddie Hanson who I think was very influential in the hobby and he also had a version of the “Purple Monster” called “Eddie’s Purple Monster” that was a lighter purple overall but very beautiful as well. Eddie then moved to Bali and was responsible (I believe) for bringing blue LED lights to exporters and coral divers and that changed the hobby in such a way I think that it’s hard to calculate, yet it goes unnoticed. Eddie picked a lot of beautiful corals that were exported to the US and became famous in their own right. Anyhow, Eddie left the hobby years ago and now lives in Maine or Rhode Island about as far away as possible from the amazing corals he loved and brought to the hobby such a long time ago.

I’m following along. I got a piece from a local reefer who had his colony verified from Steve Tyree. He got the colony from a tank tear down that was running for 20 years. Idk we’ll see.

His colony is the deep purple and white polyps. Mine looks more bluish now and I took this picture later when my schedule is more blue. Hopefully I can get it to purple up a bit

this was given to me as a small colony. I am unsure of the origins but suspect its not a PM. the deep purple is similar but the polyps are more brown than white. thoughts?

I have been fascinated with all the old sps that were apart of the hobby for a very long time. I was wondering, has similar coral from the Solomon Islands been imported after the OG came in? I know when Jake Adam’s and Unique Corals went they got a colony, but have any known come in besides that time? I’ve seen Solomon coral being imported recently so was just curious. Any other information about the purple monster will be welcomed as well. Thanks everyone.
I have a look alike mini colony that is not the OG Tyree, but looks very similar that grows much faster than the OG version...

It doesn’t look like an OG PM to me.. still a very nice purple acro tho. I think the dead giveaway when it comes to whether or not it’s a real Tyree PM is deff the growth rate.

Again, not to take away from what you have, cause it’s still a very nice acro that I would love to have a frag of.

Such a cool thread to see the PM's still got that mystique and to recognize a few screen names from back in the day!

I'm just starting up a tank after being away since about 2015.

I had a 135 gallon cubish tank (3X3X2), started back around 2001.

Got a frag of the PM from Tyree, December 2003.
Grew it out until about 2009.

I sold various coral frags through Tubs, exoticreefs.us and Hector and Jeremy, exoticfrags.us. Shipped frags to a few people directly. I remember shipping something to Jake Adams. I shipped something to a guy in Tennessee. He shipped me a mason jar of white lightning via USPS.

I was luck enough to frequent Eddie Hansen's place, Tropical Paradise. His surge tanks were SO cool! James at Aquascene where I got the Icefire echinata.

The 135 started to have trouble and things started to decline so decided to take it down (and PG&E was running about $750/month).

Downsized to an ADA tank. That tank started to split a bottom seam. Moved to a 57 gallon Illuminata.

Time crunch with family and life made keeping a tank a hassle and just got out.

I hope to get another piece of the PM, Icefire, Oregon tort, superman and blue hoek (Tyree blue matrix) when this tank is ready.

I couldn't find any pictures of the 135. Here are a few terrible pictures of the PM after it had STN'ed.

Welcome back! How are you adapting to the hobby 9 years later? I came back last year after a 5 year break and I was a little overwhelmed with all the new equipment, new corals in hobby, and the acceptance of overly blue photos with filters on the images lol. I’m doing my best to use old school knowledge to see through the BS, while utilizing the real advancements made in the hobby. Try to locate a source of a PM and get on a list or something. Hard coral to get these days.

Thanks! You're one of the names I remember from RC! I hope I'll figure things out. How are you doing? That 30 day growth is looking good!
I'm trying to stay away from things with an app or web based. I put up an Orphek Icon, plugged it into a timer. Couldn't figure out how to turn it on! LOL! Oh, I've been told only old people use, LOL! LOL!

I'm trying to KISS. Only planning on less than 10 SPS.. LOL,. we'll see how that goes.
