I just put one on my reef tank to help clear some algae but I got to thinking what are some of the good things and bad things that can happen running one?

I am sure you know this but a uv will not clear up algae on surfaces only green water or algae in the water column.

imo (pro) helps destroy undiresable alge and some parasites in water flowing though unit (con) more maintance esp with salt and life span of bulbs need to be replaced @ 3 -6 months
I have used them for quarantine/hosp tanks breaking them down and cleanining when finished kept replacing bulbs min.

i never really ran one (except for a small turbo twist which never did anything) until recently. i had been battling dinos in my new 180g set up. After trying all the usual fixes and failing, i bought a lg UV from BRS. Water became crystal clear overnight and the dinos completely disappeared after a week. The UV doesnt deserve all the credit, but it certainly helped tremendously.
